It’s no secret that sleep is important and that it is vital for health.
So let me ask you, “how is the sleep situation in your family?”. Is everybody falling asleep easily and is everybody in your family staying asleep throughout the night??
Sleep is so vital to your health because that’s when tissue growth and repair occurs, energy is restored and hormones that are essential for growth and development are released. Simply put, that is when healing, growth and development happens! So it is very important for your family’s overall health and wellbeing!
When families initially come into Peak Potential Family Chiropractic, usually someone in the house either doesn’t fall asleep easily or they don’t stay asleep or both. Sometimes it’s one child who doesn’t sleep well and then the parents don’t sleep well because they are waking up with their kid. Either situation is not ideal and is a major red flag that something is off inside the body.
So, what’s off? Why are kids and parents struggling to sleep now more than ever? It could be something in your or your child’s diet, it could due to a lack of exercise, it could be from emotional stress, or it could be a combination of all of that.
No matter if the stressor is physical, chemical, or emotional in nature, it automatically causes the body to shift into the sympathetic side of the nervous system.
The nervous system has two states it can be in: sympathetic or parasympathetic. The sympathetic side is responsible for handling stressful situations by fighting, flighting or freezing. The parasympathetic side is responsible for resting, digestion, healing and development. Remember what I said occurs during sleep? Rest, digestion, healing and development! So, what side do you think your nervous system and body need to be in in order to fall asleep and stay asleep? The parasympathetic side!
So when your child is struggling to calm down and fall asleep or waking up every night in the middle of the night, it’s safe to assume that their brain is operating in the sympathetic state and that is not ideal. That’s why chiropractic has such a profound effect on sleep because the adjustment helps the brain shift out of the sympathetic state and into the parasympathetic state.
Usually, improved sleep is one of the first things that people notice after getting adjusted and that is great because that tells us that your body is starting to heal from the inside-out and that is the primary goal! It is our goal at Peak Potential Family Chiropractic to remove any interferences that are not allowing your body to properly function the way it should and many times that means changing the neurology from the stressful not sleeping state into the calm, sleeping and healing state!
